Masterclass: Running for Public Office as a Multicultural Woman | 22 September 2026

With Farhat Firdous, hosted by Fiona Pearman

Multicultural women experience many of the universal fears faced by women seeking to represent their communities, however this is often compounded by cultural expectations, racism and the feeling of having to prove that you belong.

In this masterclass, Women for Election trainer and former councillor, Farhat Firdous shares her personal journey of navigating these challenges while running for office, being in office and supporting other women to run for election.

Through her relatable stories and practical reflections, Farhat explores the challenges of racism (both personal and institutional), cultural pushback as well as family and community expectations.

This session openly acknowledges that these challenges exist; the intention is to provide a space to recognise those experiences, learn from someone who has walked the path, and discover practical ways to navigate these dynamics without carrying the burden alone.

You’ll leave with greater clarity about the challenges you may encounter, practical strategies to build support around you, and the confidence that you don’t have to face these experiences on your own.

If you’ve ever wondered whether politics is ‘for someone like me’, or worried about the impact your decision may have on your family, community or sense of belonging, this conversation is for you.

Because your voice matters. And our democracy is stronger when women from every community are able to fully participate.

Please note: This event is specifically designed for multicultural women, creating a dedicated space to explore the unique experiences and challenges they may face in politics.

A quick note on our Terminology: WFE has an inclusive definition of ‘women’. We aim to engage with, and give voice to, the diverse experience of those who may identify as women – including trans, cis and non-binary.

In registering for this event, you are accepting and promising to abide by the Women for Election Code of Conduct for events, including observing WFE’s values of collaboration and inclusion.

You also acknowledge that this event provides a safe space and therefore shall not record this meeting, including through video recording, sound recording, automated minute taking and other tools, unless they are required to assist in case of a disability.
